How to Descale a Commercial Steam Iron
Limescale can restrict steam flow, block internal pipework and cause a commercial iron to spit, stain or lose performance. Regular maintenance can help — but commercial steam equipment must be descaled correctly.
This guide explains the basic process, the warning signs to look for and when a professional strip-down and descale is the better option.
Do Not Automatically Use Vinegar or Household Descaler
Do not pour vinegar, kettle descaler or other acidic household chemicals into a commercial steam iron or boiler unless the manufacturer specifically confirms that the product and method are suitable.
The wrong chemical or concentration can damage seals, pipework, valves and internal components. Never open or drain a pressurised boiler while it is hot or under pressure.
Check These Five Things First
Commercial irons and steam generators vary considerably. Confirm the correct procedure for your equipment before adding any descaling product.
Disconnect the equipment completely from the electrical supply.
Never attempt to drain, open or service a hot pressurised boiler.
Follow the manufacturer’s specific cleaning and maintenance instructions.
Only use descaler confirmed as suitable for the equipment being treated.
Heavy internal scale may require dismantling rather than a simple flush.
How a Commercial Iron Is Descaled
The exact procedure depends on the manufacturer and equipment type. The following is a general overview rather than a replacement for the machine’s maintenance instructions.
Drain the Boiler or Water Tank
Once the equipment is switched off, unplugged, completely cool and depressurised, empty the existing water according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Never remove a boiler cap while the unit is hot or pressurised.Add the Approved Descaling Solution
Prepare the correct descaling product at the concentration recommended for the equipment. Do not increase the strength in an attempt to speed up the process.
