Choosing the Right Commercial Iron for Your Home or Business

The right commercial steam iron depends on how often you iron, the type of fabrics you handle and whether you need a compact steam generator or a larger boiler system for continuous use.

Quick answer

For occasional or light daily ironing, a compact steam generator iron is usually enough. For ironing businesses, laundries, hotels, care homes and dry cleaners, choose a commercial boiler system with strong steam output, a stainless steel boiler and refill-under-pressure or automatic refill.

Light use

Up to 3–4 hours per day

Best for home use, small B&Bs, occasional business use and start-up ironing services.

Choose: compact steam generator
Business use

Up to 8 hours per day

Best for ironing businesses, care homes, hotels, dry cleaners and busy laundry rooms.

Choose: semi-automatic boiler system
Heavy use

Continuous all-day use

Best for high-volume laundries and professional environments where downtime is costly.

Choose: automatic steam boiler

What to look for when buying

  • Steam pressure: Higher pressure helps remove creases faster, especially from linen, cotton and thicker garments.
  • Boiler capacity: Larger boilers run for longer before refilling. For busy businesses, refill-under-pressure saves time.
  • Boiler material: Stainless steel boilers are stronger, longer-lasting and better suited to commercial use.
  • Steam output: Look for consistent steam, not just a high headline pressure figure.
  • Safety features: Low-water cut-out, pressure valve, thermostat and auto shut-off are essential.
  • Maintenance: Easy draining and descaling will reduce faults and extend the life of the machine.
  • Parts support: Choose a brand where irons, hoses, valves, caps and spare parts are available long term.

Home use vs business use

For home use

You usually do not need an industrial boiler. A smaller steam generator with a 1.5–3.5 litre boiler is normally enough, provided it has good steam pressure and simple maintenance.

For business use

Choose a commercial-grade system designed for longer sessions. A stainless steel boiler, pressure refill or automatic refill, and strong parts availability are more important than buying the cheapest model.

Water quality matters

Limescale is one of the biggest causes of poor steam performance and boiler failure. If you are in a hard water area, use demineralised water, a suitable filter or a water treatment system.

Tip: Do not wait until the iron loses steam before thinking about scale. Prevention is cheaper than repair.
