How Does an Ironing Press Work?

An ironing press closes a large heated plate down onto fabric, combining heat, pressure and often steam to remove creases in a single motion. The result is a flatter, more professional finish — in a fraction of the time a traditional iron takes.

The pressing process, step by step

Every press cycle follows the same sequence. Understanding it helps you get the best results from any model.

Fabric is laid flat on the heated lower bed
The lower pressing surface is always warm and ready. You position the item flat — no stretching or pulling needed. The large surface area means fewer repositioning moves, especially on bigger pieces like sheets or tablecloths.

The top plate closes and applies even pressure
You bring the top plate down — either by hand lever or foot pedal depending on the model. It applies consistent pressure across the full plate area simultaneously. Unlike a hand iron, which works in strokes, the press contacts the entire surface at once.

Heat opens the fabric fibres
The heated plates raise the temperature of the fabric, making the fibres temporarily pliable. This is what allows creases to release — the fibres relax out of their crumpled position and become malleable.

Steam penetrates and loosens stubborn creases (if fitted)
Steam-equipped presses inject moisture directly into the fabric. Water molecules break the hydrogen bonds that hold creases in place — particularly effective on cotton, linen and heavy-duty fabrics where dry heat alone struggles.

Pressure sets the finish as the fabric cools
While under pressure, the fibres cool and set in their new flat position. Opening the press reveals a crisp, smooth result. Because the fabric is held flat while cooling, the finish lasts longer than hand-ironing.

Heat, pressure and steam — what each one does

The three elements work together. Remove any one of them and results suffer. Here's the role each plays:

Heat

Makes fabric fibres temporarily pliable so creases can release. Higher heat suits cotton and linen; lower settings protect synthetics and delicates.

Pressure

Holds the fabric flat while heat and steam do their work. Even pressure across the whole plate prevents uneven results and re-creasing at the edges.

Steam

Adds moisture to relax stubborn bonds in the fabric. Essential for thick cotton, heavy linen and items that have been stored creased for a long time.

Large plate area

Covers more fabric per press than a hand iron. Fewer moves per garment means faster throughput — critical in hotel and laundry environments.

Worth knowing: A press is not a replacement for an iron in every situation. Collars, cuffs and shaped garments still benefit from a hand iron. Many professionals use both — press for flat sections, iron for detail work.

What to look for when buying

Plate size

Larger plates (60cm+) suit high-volume or large-item work. Smaller plates are fine for occasional home or light commercial use.

Steam or dry?

Steam is worth having for cotton-heavy workloads. Dry presses are simpler to maintain and still deliver excellent results on most fabrics.

Pressure mechanism

Hand-lever models are standard. Foot-pedal operation frees both hands for repositioning fabric — better for high-volume commercial use.

Safety features

Auto shut-off, heat shielding on the top plate and a stable base are non-negotiable. Essential if the press will be in use for long shifts.

 

  • Volume: If you're pressing more than 10 items a day, a commercial-grade press pays for itself quickly in time saved.
  • Fabric types: Varied fabrics? Look for precise temperature control and steam on/off switching.
  • Space: Presses are wider than ironing boards — measure your space before ordering.
  • Budget: Entry-level presses start around £200. Professional and industrial models range significantly higher but are built for continuous use.

Common questions

Can an ironing press damage fabric?

Only if the temperature is set too high for the fabric type. Always match heat settings to the fabric care label. Use a pressing cloth on delicates and synthetics as an extra precaution.

Is a press better than a steam generator iron?

For flat, large-surface work — yes, usually. A steam generator iron gives you more manoeuvrability for shaped garments. Many commercial operations use both for different tasks.

How long does a press cycle take?

Typically 5–15 seconds per section depending on fabric weight and temperature. A full shirt can be done in 2–3 minutes once you have a workflow established.

Do I need a separate steam boiler?

Not with most domestic and light commercial presses — they have a built-in water tank. Larger industrial presses may connect to an external steam boiler for higher output and continuous operation.
